Avoch Primary School window, 2007
This window is based on the themes in the school badge: Forests, Farming, and Fishing.
As Avoch is traditionally a fishing village, the overall pattern is that of waves.
Along the top, from left to right are details from a Yew, Apple, Hazel, and Rowan tree. I chose these for their significance in local folklore.
The next wave represents local farming with Oats, Barley, and Wheat.
Finally, I feel it is important to celebrate Avoch’s unique dialect, which is heard less and less these days - I remember hearing of ‘ground officers’ and ‘boubas’ when I was at Avoch Primary. Therefore, I've written the names of some of the fish netted in the firth, North Sea and beyond by generations of Avoch Fishermen, along with the ‘Avochie’ translation.
